Artistic Director Emily Isaacson, Rabbi Carolyn Braun, Umaru Balde, and chaplain Kitty Garlid discuss the concept of “messiah” in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as well as how Messiah. Multiplied. offers a broader interpretation.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Dr. Emily Isaacson, artistic director of Classical Uprising, is a conductor fiercely committed to reimagining classical music for today’s audience. She was named the 2018 Maine Artist of the Year by the Maine Arts Commission and one of 50 Mainers Leading the State by Maine magazine, as well as a three-time winner of The American Prize.

Rabbi Carolyn Braun has been the spiritual leader of Temple Beth El since 1995. Among her many roles as a spiritual leader, Rabbi Braun has been involved in interfaith advocacy and dialogue, was an early supporter of marriage equality, and has helped advocate for asylum seekers in the Portland area. She also sings in the Oratorio Chorale!

Umaru Balde is the City of Portland’s first-ever Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Director. Prior to moving to Maine, he was the Director of the Multicultural Family Center for the City of Dubuque, Iowa, and an investigator for the Civil Rights Commission for the City of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He has attended the Hebrew University in Jerusalem for Hebrew language studies; has a Masters in Comparative Religions and a Bachelors in English Literature from Al-Azhar University in Cairo, and is a doctoral candidate (Ed.D) at the University of Northern Iowa.

Kitty Garlid, MDiv., is the Director of Spiritual Care at Maine Medical Center. She studied at Yale Divinity School and is a Board Certified professional chaplain. Kitty came to Maine from Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut, where she was director of spiritual care and pastoral education for 27 years. Previously, she was a parish intern in Seattle, WA, and a chaplain resident at Memorial Sloan Kettering and New York Hospital in New York.
